Danh từ dùng làm tính từ
Trong tiếng Anh có nhiều trường hợp một danh từ đứng trước một danh từ khác làm nhiệm vụ của một tính từ (a wool coat, a gold watch, a history teacher). Danh từ đi trước có vai trò của một tính từ, bổ nghĩa cho danh từ đi sau. Các danh từ đóng vai trò của tính từ luôn luôn ở dạng số ít, cho dù danh từ được chúng bổ nghĩa có thể ở dạng số nhiều (trừ một vài trường hợp cá biệt: a sports car, small-claims court, a no-frills store...). Các liên kết số đếm - danh từ (number-noun) luôn được ngăn cách bởi dấu gạch nối.
We took a five-week tour.
(We took a tour that lasted five weeks)
He has a two-year subscription to that magazine.
(His subscription to that magazine is for two years)
These are twenty-dollar shoes.
(These shoes cost twenty dollars.)
Khi nào dùng danh từ làm tính từ, khi nào dùng tính từ của danh từ đó?
Trong một số trường hợp nếu dùng danh từ làm tính từ thì nó mang nghĩa đen:
A gold watch = a watch made of gold.
Nhưng nếu dùng tính từ thì nó mang nghĩa bóng:
A golden opportunity = a chance that it is very rare and precious (quí giá).
Không được dùng tính từ để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ khi nó chỉ tính chất nghề nghiệp hoặc nội dung, khi đó phải dùng danh từ để đóng vai trò tính từ: a mathematics teacher, a biology book
Cách dùng Enough
Enough thay đổi vị trí theo từ loại của từ mà nó bổ nghĩa. Nó luôn đứng sau tính từ và phó từ:
Are those fTench fries good enough for you?
She speak Spanish well enough to be an interpreter.
It is not cold enough now to wear a heavy jacket.
Nhưng lại đứng trước danh từ:
Do you have enough sugar for the cake?
He does not have enough money to attend the concert.
Nếu danh từ đã được nhắc đến trước đó, thì ở dưới có thể dùng enough như một đại từ thay cho danh từ I forgot money. Do you have enough?
