How to prevent and treat bronchitis
People are more susceptible to contracting bronchitis if their lung defences are low, such as in cigarette smokers, the elderly or those people who are unwell for another reason such as chronic illness.
Most cases of bronchitis are caused by viruses, spread by infected people coughing and sneezing. Sometimes bacteria will cause bronchitis. In these cases antibiotics may be given in order to kill the infection.
